It’s always sunny somewhere so we’ve pulled together some of our favourite summer music on Spotify for wherever and whenever you get your tan on. Some make us dance, others make us laugh and smile, all of them bring us fond memories.
A big one to start with that always makes us dance, smile and laugh is Beenie Man’s I’m Drinking Rum and Red Bull. We’ve heard this at Notting Hill Carnival more times than we can count and love to stick it on in after a BBQ.
Sally Brown, by Bad Manners - a cracker from the days of braces and 2 Tone is another knee-lifter that takes us back to long nights spent at The Valve, Sydney. In fact there are a few from that class in here, from Pass the Dutchie, Musical Youth, to Toots & The Maytals Country Road and Pressure Drop. We never quite got the trilbies, but ska is one of our greatest loves.
Next stop on memory lane is Antigua where the Jungle is a stepping stone from beach shack reggae to jump-up raves. Sunday nights everyone drives up to Shirley Heights, overlooking English Harbour. Open-top jeeps, warm Caribbean breeze, a cold one and the crackle of All Night by Damian and Stephan Marley on the stereo. Happy days.
Somehow Having a Party, by Lee “Scratch” Perry has always felt a bit prophetic. It's a great one to get the day started and is an ideal remedy at the end of a long week.
Escape (The Pina Colada Song), Rupert Holmes has it’s own story (only just found this out having played it for years and never properly listened to the words). Don’t worry, no spoilers here, just stick it on and see for yourself.
We're ending in Argentina with Hace Falta, La Bomba De Tiempo. Even if you’ve never heard of this cooperative, or been to South America, the music is so evocative it’ll take you straight there. Find them every Monday at Ciudad Cultural Konex in Buenos Aires.
We hope you like the playlist, it keeps growing and changing so let us know if you think it’s missing anything or if something should be removed immediately.
