get shirty: summer shirts for your holiday style

It’s all very well having the swimming trunks for your holiday sorted but if you haven’t nailed the shirt/short combo then you’re going to be a laughing stock. An old sports t-shirt with an 80’s logo does not a holiday outfit make. Neither do neon Hawaiian shirts (which by the way aren’t out completely – they just need careful consideration). Nothing says poolside/beach chic like a crisp linen shirt or soft cotton pastel number and they both perfectly complement the bright prints of your l’étale trunks.

Here are our some of our favourite summer shirts:

On paper a towelling shirt in bright prints might not scream stylish, but in reality these British-made shirts are brilliant. It’s not often you come across a totally original design but these soft shirts, towel on the inside, cool print on the outside, are a breath of fresh air.

This ethical clothing company was started when founder Daisy Hambro worked as a volunteer teacher in India. Inspired by the block printing techniques and vibrant colours of the country, and wanting to build a brand that makes a difference to lives, she started Tobias; giving 10% of her profits to the Akshanka Foundation. Tobias shirts come in pale pastel shades with pops of colour on the collars and cuffs.

Despite being called a Grandad collar we think this is a seriously stylish look and perfect for hotter climes (no sweaty necks). Hartford shirts are made of extra soft cotton and cut in a slim but unrestrictive cut.

Portuguese Flannel

More of an evening garb than for by the pool but still perfect for your summer wardrobe, this white shirt with woven motifs comes from family-run business Portuguese Flannel - currently in its fourth generation. The company prides itself on using traditional processes with bespoke fabrics and designing well-fitting soft shirts.
