Some people are hard to buy Christmas presents for. The men in your life will all, of course, receive a pair of l’étale swimming trunks, but what about the overly-generous aunt or your cousin who already has four pairs (well another won’t hurt, but we understand if you need a new idea)? Coffee table books fill that present-buying gap, where a complete absence of inspiration meets with an exceptional knowledge of the receiver’s interests after years of dinner table chat.
So here are four new book releases and an old safari classic to help you with that tricky yuletide purchase.
for the photographer - Escape: Gray Malin
You’ll probably be familiar with the world-renowned photographer Gray Malin’s fun, evocative scenes that can be found on friends’, bars’ and celebrities’ walls. His second volume Escape is a sublime journey through numerous vistas and is broken into chapters such as surf, pools and isles. With his professional eye for a colourful swimming scene, this is definitely one of our favourite books.
for the adventurer - Going Out is Going In: Jeff Johnson & James Joiner
This chronicle is packed with photos from an extraordinary group of adventurers and, brilliantly, a downloadable playlist from a heap of musicians. All proceeds go to 1% for the Planet (an alliance of businesses that give 1% of their sales to sustainability-minded nonprofits of their choosing) plus there are only 3,000 copies, making this a very special limited-edition gift.
for the drone lover - Above the World: DJI
If you know drones, you’ll be familiar with DJI, a giant in this burgeoning industry. To celebrate its decade of putting little robots in the sky, it has curated this spectacular homage to its greatest fan; the aerial photographer.
for the safari lover - The Complete Book of Southern African Mammals: Gus Mills & Lex Hes
If they like talking about spotting the Big Five before their breakfast, than this will no doubt find pride of place in their downstairs loo. A wonderfully concise encyclopaedia of all 343 Southern African mammals filled with maps, evolutionary charts, descriptive portraits and of course fantastic shots of the beasts.
for the luxury traveller - Chic Stays: Condé Nast Traveller
Finally they’ve made a world’s best hotels book! And it’s exactly what you’d expect from the world’s best travel publication. With personal tales from 36 globetrotters including Cara Delevingne, Eddie Redmayne, Kate Moss and Sebastian Faulks, plus shots from Condé Nast’s best travel photographers, this is the ultimate aesthetic hit-list for the luxury traveller.
Hopefully we’ve managed to tick one or two people off your Christmas list, or perhaps we’ve inspired another idea, do let us know.
